Meta-analysis of Cognitive-based Intervention for Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the intervention effects of the cognitive enhancement program by meta-analyzing cognitive intervention studies for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment.
Methods : From 2010 to 2020, the effect size of the moderator and outcome variables was calculated for 15 randomized controlled experimental studies and 10 quasi-experimental studies related to cognitive-based interventions selected through domestic and international databases.
Results : In the analysis of outcome variables, the randomized controlled trials showed significant effect size on global cognition and executive function, and the quasi-experimental design showed significant effect size in global cognition, long-term memory and retrieval, general short-term memory and visual processing. The moderator variable analysis showed different results in the effect size of moderator variable such as participation environment, intervention type, total session time, total number of sessions and control group’s intervention type depending on study design.
Conclusion : This study confirmed that the intervention effect of the cognitive improvement program for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment differs between the effective outcome variable and the moderator variable according to the study design. It suggests that follow-up studies are needed to find the optimal values of various moderator variables for each current intervention program, and cognitive intervention programs should be developed considering the effects of various experimental variables.
